Buongiorno amici:
My Food and culture tour 2022 starts today at Pezze di Greco, a lovely town in Brindisi, Puglia. Early this morning, I walked the beaches in Torre Canne, a pristine fishing village part of the city of Fasano.
Torre Canne is a southeastern Italian coastal village and hamlet (frazione) of the municipality of Fasano in the Province of Brindisi, Apulia. Torre Canne is located on the Adriatic Coast, between Savelletri and Rosa Marina, 11 km east of Fasano. It is 20 km far from Ostuni, 24 from Monopoli, 26 from Martina Franca, 54 from Brindisi, 62 from Taranto and 67 from Bari.
The most significant industry in the village is fishing. However, tourism related to the sea and the local spa increased in the second half of the 20th century.
Punta Torre Canne Lighthouse (Italian: Faro di Punta Torre Canne) is an active lighthouse in the homonymous village in the municipality of Fasano. The place takes the name from an ancient coastal tower built in the 16th century to protect the coast from the Turks and the presence of giant cane. The lighthouse was built in 1929 in concrete and has a tapered octagonal prism with a balcony and lantern attached to a 1-story keeper’s house; the tower and the building are white painted.
The village received some attention from the German media on October 23, 1985, when serial Norbert Poehlke, and his son Gabriel, were found dead of bullet wounds in what appeared to be a murder-suicide. Poehlke was a police officer in the German state of Baden-Württemberg who murdered three motorists and used their cars in bank robberies across the state. As a result, he was dubbed 'Der Hammermörder' (The Hammer-Killer). He used sledgehammers during the robberies, and people revealed his identity after suicide. Poehlke had also shot dead his wife and another son, Adrian, before fleeing with Gabriel to Italy; police found their bodies at the family home in Backnang three days before Poehlke's suicide. {1}
